Alexandra DeMello

Life Care Centers of America recognized the outstanding volunteer contributions of Alexandra DeMello with its Carl W. Campbell Wind Beneath My Wings Award on Aug. 27, 2018.

The award, commemorated by a crystal sculpture of an eagle in flight, was given during the company’s annual management meeting at its headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee.

“This is the highest award that we give to anyone in the company,” said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. “We truly value the contributions of Alexandra and other volunteers who share her selfless spirit.”

DeMello has been a volunteer at Life Care Center of New Market, Virginia, for the past nine years. She started when her family moved to the area from California and volunteers Monday through Friday for five to six hours each day. She has accumulated more than 10,000 volunteer hours helping residents with activities, assisting on outings, distributing mail daily and tending to the facility’s aviary.

Because of a childhood diagnosis of epilepsy, DeMello is unable to drive, so her family brings her to the facility each day.

“She’s always loved helping people and being around people,” said her mother, Wendy. “The residents give her a lot in her life.”

“I love being around the residents every day,” said DeMello. “I love to be with them doing activities.”

“We are very proud of her,” said her father, Edward DeMello. “Life Care is Alexandra’s life. This is what she wakes up for. This is what she always thinks about. She cannot wait to get there the next day.”

The Carl W. Campbell Wind Beneath My Wings Award is presented annually to a volunteer chosen from among Life Care’s more than 200 facilities nationwide. Criteria include serving as an inspirational example of extraordinary dedication and providing leadership in the field of nursing home volunteerism.

Carl W. Campbell is an entrepreneur from Washington who provided financial support for the construction of Life Care’s first nursing facility in Cleveland, Tennessee. Campbell has continued to lend his resources and heart to the growth of the company and the achievement of its mission.
